Charlie and Lola – Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip – Heroes – 18 Oct 2007

The first recording today starts with the end of Bobinogs.

Then, another new episode of Charlie and LolaLucky, Lucky Me. For some reason, this episode doesn’t seem to be on iPlayer, when all the rest of the episodes are. I wonder why.

Lola is feeling lucky today. She gets a pink bracelet from the cereal box.

She has a new lucky dress, a stripey one in all her lucky colours.

But next day she gets soup on her lucky dress.

They’re going to see Batcat at the cinema, and they’re very excited. I said the other day I liked the fake franchise films in this show, and Batcat’s definitely one of them. There’s a montage of scenes, including one which replicates something from Superman The Movie where he stops a train from derailing on a bridge. And this leads me to wonder if it’s possible that this episode is missing from iPlayer because DC complained about copyright infringement. It seems unlikely, although I remember that Mario Puzo, who wrote the original screenplay for the movie (heavily rewritten by Tom Mankiewicz) had a clause in his contract that any retelling of the story of the movie meant he would get paid again. Which is why there’s no novelisation of the movie, or comic adaptation, and allegedly also why the actors made up stuff that never appeared in the film during interviews. So did a lawyer see this montage and worry that it infringed something? Or is there a more mundane reason? If any of my readers can shed any light at all on this small mystery, I’d be very grateful.

The cinema is sold out when they get to the ticket booth.

On the way home Lola finds a shiny coin on the ground.

They stop off at a comic shop to buy a comic. This is an amazing comic shop, although impractical for the smaller customer.

She buys a Mini Robots comic, although she doesn’t seem that keen on it. They meet Marv outside and he tells them that his brother Morton has been looking all over for that comic, so Lola feels lucky again. But then Sizzles grabs the comic and runs off with it, then drops it in a puddle.

But then Lola sees Lotta queueing up for something. They’re handing out helium balloons with labels, that you can write your name and address on and release, and maybe someone will find your balloon and write to you.

Later on, Lola receives a letter with some unusual stamps on it.

Inside is Lola’s balloon, and a message from a boy in China asking if she wants to be his pen friend. So Lola was quite lucky after all.

Media Centre Description: Children’s animation. Join Lola and Charlie, a brother and sister, as they deal with topics that affect their everyday lives. Lola is convinced she’s the luckiest person in the whole wide world, especially when Granny and Grandpa send her and Charlie the money to go and see the new Bat Cat film. Bat Cat is her favourite and she can’t wait to see the film! Then things start to go wrong and Lola’s luck runs out. Or has it?

After this, there’s a trail for The Large Family. And the ever-present Autumn song gets another outing.

Then the recording stops as an episode of Tweenies starts.

The next recording today starts with the end of an episode of Embarrassing Illnesses.

Then, another episode of Studio 60 on the Sunset StripHarriet Dinner. Jack talks to Tom Jeter and tells him he has to go to the dinner honouring Harriet with Kim Tao, and persuade her not to give up the Juilliard school and her viola.

Matt suggests that Danny try to stop thinking about Jordan, after his faxed letters of recommendation embarrassed her so much.

Matt meanwhile is still bidding on a dinner with Harriet, believing that the other top bidder LukeS5858 is Luke Scott, a director who Harriet was seen with recently. “Bid 5,301 dollars.” “And 5,302 to the sex club?” “It’s not a sex club. It’s a polyamorous movement supporting the choice to engage in responsible, multi -partnered relationships.” “They wanted me to ask you if you’d be willing to accept an award at their next meeting. I should tell them no.” “Yeah, an award’s an award.”

In a collision with another show we’re watching, the celebrity guest this week is Heroes’ Masi Oka.

Tom has to tell Lucy that their date needs to be postponed, and because he’s a stupid man in a TV show, he doesn’t tell her the truth about it (which would in no way make him look bad) instead he makes up something rather stupid, and you know this will rebound. Men on TV are very stupid.

Harriet is rehearsing a film, which looks like it’s about Keith Richards, and it’s directed by Matt’s love rival Luke Scott. So I wonder why he would have to bid for a charity auction to get a date. Sarah Paulson’s English accent is pretty good.

Cal is shooting a bit with a lot of snakes, and they discover one of the snakes – vipers – has got out.

The auction ends up in a tie. Harriet is very pleased (although she still doesn’t know Matt was one of the bidders). “Two people have been bidding each other up through the roof. I thought this is so sweet. Let both of them come. The church gets twice the money.”  When she leaves, his assistant says “And the sex people want to know if you’ve got any clips they can put together for a tribute reel.”

Tom meets with Kim at the awards dinner.

Matt meets Harriet and tells her he was one of the winning bidders. Then they meet the other bidder, who isn’t Luke Scott. He’s a fifteen year old. “Cody was the winner in the online auction.” “Well, you’re @LukeS5858.” “Star Wars, dude. Yeah, it’s Skywalker Ranch’s…” “5858, Lucas Valley Road.” “Can you believe nobody else caught that user name?”

Danny takes Jordan up to the roof to apologise to her. No, I’ve no idea why. But they get stuck out there. At one point they’re both trying to get cell coverage. On a roof in Los Angeles. In a building that probably has WiFi everywhere. I don’t think Aaron Sorkin understands how any of that stuff works.

Lucy is also at the dinner, and she finds Tom with Kim, so naturally, that’s their relationship down the pan.

Danny does a long rant about “One Sheet World.” “it’s a continuation of the one-sheet world. It’s a one-sheet world. You know, a movie poster, a one-sheet. I think we’ll do the Green Lantern. I can see the one-sheet now. Don’t worry that we don’t have a story. We’re gonna make all our money before word of mouth can kill us anyway. We elect presidents the same way. He’s got a big name. He’ll raise money. He’ll get the nomination. We’ll teach him how to be president later.”

Harriet is cross with Matt and his expectation that she would just fall over him because of the bid. “We’re going to be finished tonight.”

Media Centre Description: Drama series about a late-night comedy sketch show. Jordan and Danny are locked on the roof of the theatre while everyone else attends a dinner honouring Harriet. Harriet’s relationship with Matt begins to falter.
