Charlie and Lola – Cardiac Arrest – 15 Oct 2007

The first recording today starts with the end of Bobinogs.

There’s an Eco Beebies trail. And Andy does some autumn-themed crafts.

Then another new episode of Charlie and LolaHow Many More Minutes?.

Lola wants Charlie to play “Sticky Fish” with her, but he’s busy watching TV – Pirate Squidbones.

I do like the programmes they feature on this show.

Unfortunately, they both have to go to the dentist, where their mother has an appointment, so they have to wait in the waiting room for her. And they get very bored.

They try Hide and Seek. “Found you! And the lady at the desk says, “Can you please put that plant down?””

Lola finds the water cooler. I’m reminded of the time that I had to take my oldest two children to work with me – possibly about the same time as this programme was going out, as I was still working at the BBC. I commandeered a meeting room in the corner of the office, and printed out some pictures that they could colour in and do some drawing, while I was busy with work stuff. But the thing they liked best was discovering the hot chocolate machine, which they could just go and get a cup of hot chocolate at any time.

“I wonder why those children are so smiley. What are they smiling about?” “I don’t know.”

“We could be at home, watching Pirate Squidbones.” “Or playing Sticky Fish.”

Soon their imaginations take over. “Pirate Squidbones has captured the Smiley children! Oh, no!” “Give us your teeth, or the Smiley children get it!”

There’s some swashbuckling.

“Walk the plank, you good-for-nothing jellyguts!”

When they leave, Lola is worried about the Smiley children. “They won’t ever be safe from Pirate Squidbones!” So she asks the receptionist, who gives her the poster to take home.

Media Centre Description: Children’s animation. Join Lola and Charlie, a brother and sister, as they deal with topics that effect their everyday lives. Long car journeys and rainy days can be pretty boring. Dentist’s Waiting Rooms are the worst! The lady at the desk seems determined to ruin any fun that Charlie and Lola start to have. But even she can’t stop Charlie and Lola from turning a dull old water cooler, fish tank and tooth poster into an epic pirate adventure on the high seas!

After this, Andy and Sid sing a big song about Autumn. My grown-up daughter heard it and said it’s the song she most associates with Autumn.

The next recording starts with the end of The Cinema Show, looking at doctors on film.

There’s a trail for Fanny Hill.

Then, the first episode of Cardiac ArrestWelcome to the House of Pain. This was Jed Mercurio’s first drama, written while he was still a practising doctor under the pseudonym John MacUre.

Helen Baxendale plays Claire Maitland, one of the more experienced junior doctors, first encountered trying to save the life of a woman who the nursing staff have been instructed is dying.

New doctor Andrew Collin (Andrew Lancel) is looking quite pleased with his new job. I’m sure it won’t last.

He struggles on his first shift, and one of his patients, a man with terminal asbestosis, dies. “Are we…? Are we meant to save lives or speed their end?” “Andrew, it’s time to realise that medical school is over. Albert Gray received the highest standard of medical care. My judgment was to pull the plug, because prolonging a patient’s death isn’t the same as prolonging his life. I’ve got no patience with your misplaced concern. Your job is to make the decisions that everyone else runs away from and dumps on you – the doctor.”

Dr Raj helps a patient out when his kidney stone was disposed of. “I thought his kidney stone was chucked away.” “It was. He was nagging me so much, I got him a specimen pot, put his name on it and found a stone.” “Whose stone’s that?” “No-one’s. That’s a piece of gravel I fetched from the car park in my lunch hour.”

Andrew has to notify the family of the man’s death.

The recording stops here.

Media Centre Description: Hard-hitting hospital drama series. Medical school has not prepared Dr Andrew Collin for the realities of life on a NHS ward. Within minutes he is thrust into a life-or-death situation and is soon at odds with senior house officer Claire Maitland, an unsentimental physician bent on letting the youngster learn the hard way.

The next recording picks up just after the last one stopped, with the end of the first episode.

There’s a trail for The Genius of Photography.

Then, the next episode of Cardiac ArrestDoctors and Nurses.

Danny Webb, as Mr Betancourt, one of the senior doctors, seems to be angry all the time.

Dr Monica Broome, played by the amazingly named Pooky Quesnel, is having trouble juggling her job with having small children.

The nurses don’t have a high opinion of Claire. “Claire’s a bitch that hates nurses! Doctors have it easy compared to us. Who does all the physical work, not to mention all the dirty jobs?”

Raj is in trouble for alerting the infection control team about a fake case of MRSA.

One of the doctors is a lech. A nurse gets something on her uniform, and he starts wiping it off. When he leaves, Claire says “You’ve got a witness to support your charge of sexual harassment.” “My friend was assaulted. When she told the tutors, they said she had misinterpreted a friendly gesture. In the end, SHE got transferred. I don’t want to be transferred. I like it here.”

So Claire gets him into a closet, and gets him worked up, then kicks him out into the corridor.

Media Centre Description: Hospital drama series. Andrew pays the price for being nice to nurses, while a prank of Raj’s closes down a ward and lands Monica with the blame. Dr Claire Maitland plans her own revenge against the sexual exploits of Dr Mortimer.
