Charlie and Lola – Channel 4 at 25: The Tube – 12 Oct 2007

The first recording starts with the end of Tommy Zoom.

Then, another episode of Charlie and LolaThis is Actually My Party. It’s Charlie’s birthday, and he’s having a party.

Lola is a bit too excited about things, She opens all of Charlie’s cards for him.

Charlie’s party is going to be a monster cake. Mum has made a special cake for him. Lola isn’t quite as excited by this. “Oh, it’s a shame there’s no pink icing.”

Charlie’s pleased with his monster decorations.

While Charlie is out buying a monster mask, Lola stays at home and helps. But her idea of a party is a lot of pink.

She also replaces all the monster stuff in the party bags with “much nicer” stuff.

Lola keeps answering the door, and now she’s started opening Charlie’s presents.

Lola puts on some happy party music so they can play musical statues. All the monsters look bemused.

She also blows the candles out on his cake.

After Charlie tells her off for taking over his party, Lola starts putting things back to a monster theme.

And in the end, her pink cakes are popular with the guests. “Even monsters think pink icing is the tastiest!”

Media Centre Description: Children’s animation. Join Lola and Charlie, a brother and sister, as they deal with topics that affect their everyday lives. Meet along the way Marv, Sizzles, Lotta and Soren Lorensen. Lola wants to make Charlie’s birthday party the best party anyone could ever have. The problem is that Lola’s idea of a good party isn’t anything like Charlie’s. Lola has to undo a lot of what she’s done, but is still really pleased that Charlie’s friends love her pink fairy cakes.

After this there’s a trail for The Large Family. There’s also another Eco Beebies song, then the recording stops during The Tweenies.

The other recording today is yet another programme from Channel 4’s 25th anniversary. It’s Channel 4 at 25: The Tube, and rather than being a compilation, this is a full episode, which is often more interesting, as it’s not just the things that have survived posterity, so maybe there’ll be some obscure nonsense.

Like a man playing spoons in the queue.

The first musical item is from Dexy’s Midnight Runners, which was recorded from a previous show, but wasn’t included in that.

They talk to Mari Wilson and her amazing beehive.

There’s a presenter here, Mike Everett, who was introduced by Paula thusly: “And we’ve also got Mike Everett, who was going to be one of our presenters but, unfortunately, he got had up for GBH at the last minute and couldn’t appear. That’s absolutely true.”

Big Country are live in the studio.

Paul Young is in the studio, not to perform, just to “see Mari Wilson and join in the frivolities.”

There’s a film about the Northern Ireland rock scene including music from Cruella de Ville.
