Charlie and Lola – House of Cards – Heroes – 11 Oct 2007

The first recording today starts with the end of Tommy Zoom.

There’s a trail for The Large Family.

Then, Charlie and LolaI Am Extremely Magic. We haven’t seen this one yet.

Charlie is learning magic with his magic set.

Lola wonders if the magic might rub off on her, but Charlie is keeping his secrets. He’s no Masked Magician.

So Lola practises with Soren Lorenson. She has a magic hat and cape.

“And I can disappear hundreds of white rabbits!”

She turns Soren Lorenson into a frog.

But she still struggles to make a rabbit disappear. She asks Lotta to be her assistant, and tries to make her disappear, but it doesn’t work.

And she still can’t vanish the rabbit.

Charlie tries to cheer her up, but he still doesn’t tell her any of his secrets. He produces coins from her ears

He gives her his magic wand, and makes it produce flowers. “I can do magic!”

So Lola sets out to do another trick, and tries to disappear the rabbit. She puts her “cape” over the rabbit in the hat and waves her wand. Nobody notices some movement under the cape, not even Lola.

When she removes the cape, the rabbit has disappeared.

It certainly gets the right reaction from her audience. Nobody can believe it.

Nobody knows where the rabbit has gone. It’s a complete mystery. And nobody notices Sizzles creeping off with his new toy.

These episodes are still such a joy.

Media Centre Description: Children’s animation. Join Lola and Charlie, a brother and sister, as they deal with topics that affect their everyday lives. Meet along the way Marv, Sizzles, Lotta and Soren Lorensen Charlie is Magic. Lola knows this for a fact. He has a new magic set and has been practising to great effect. Lola wants to be magic too, but can’t get the knack of it. Charlie tries to help her out, but it is Sizzles who helps Lola learn magic – and some magic it is!

After this there’s another Eco Beebies song. Then, the recording stops with the start of Tweenies.

The next recording starts with the end of Francesco’s Italy.

There’s a trail for a new season, The Genius of Photography.

Then, we have the last episode of House of Cards. I’ve already looked at this one in some detail on a tape. But just to keep you apprised of the political situation, here’s what I wrote with slightly better quality screengrabs.

After this, over to the other side for the final part of House Of Cards. Francis Urquhart reluctantly accepts the nomination for leader of the conservatives.

His fixer, Tim Stamper is helping him discredit his rivals.

The Health Minister is visiting a company making hi-tech wheelchairs, and when his car is surrounded by protesters, he puts the can into reverse and runs over a man in a wheelchair.

Urquhart’s role as chief whip gives him plenty of dirt he can deploy against other rivals, like a Minister and a rent boy. “Personal and family reasons. Shame.”

Mattie Storin (Susannah Harker) is still having her affair with Urquhart (she calls him Daddy, which has always creeped me out). She’s digging around for more stories.

Front runner Patrick Woolton is forced to pull out when he’s sent a tape of him having sex with a woman who’s not his wife, at the party conference.

Roger O’Neill is falling apart, and thinks Urquhart might not get him the knighthood he wants. Urquhart puts rat poison in his cocaine supply, then sends him home, and he ends up dead in a motorway service station.

Mattie finally puts everything together, and realises Urquhart is behind all the leaks, and O’Neill’s death. She goes to find him in Westminster, first coming across his henchman Stamper. Am I misremembering, or was Colin Jeavons a regular on Play School or Play Away? I definitely remember him from children’s TV before I became aware of him in grown-up TV.

Mattie confronts Urquhart on the roof of Westminster. As soon as the scene started, my wife said “If somebody doesn’t end up thrown off that roof I’ll be disappointed.” Reader, she wasn’t disappointed.

Media Centre Description: Andrew Davies’ adaptation of Michael Dobbs’ best-selling satirical novel about the corrupt and cynical world of British party politics. In the run up to the leadership election Urquhart becomes ever more ruthless. He must eliminate each one of his rivals, but what can he do about Mattie?
