In Search of Moebius: Jean Giraud – 23 Sept 2007

Today’s recording starts with the end of Everest ER.

There’s a Flight of the Conchords trail.

Then, another comics-based documentary, In Search of Moebius: Jean Giraud. Although the actual title seems to be Moebius Redux: A Life in Pictures.

Unlike Steve Ditko, Moebius is happy to talk about his life and work.

There are contributions from other artists, like Jim Lee.

And Mike Mignola.

Phillipe Druillet was a contemporary of Moebius.

Enki Bilal – all these names are familiar from Heavy Metal, the US version of the French magazine Metal Hurlant, which was launched after a lot of the artists, who were working on the magazine Pilote, decided they wanted a publication which was devoted to science fiction rather than humour.

Alejandro Jodorowsky talks about his attempted movie of Dune, for which he enlisted Moebius and others as concept artists.

Dan O’Bannon, who would go on to write Alien, also worked on the project, working with Moebius, and when the project fell apart, he had to get his life back together, so we wrote the screenplay of Alien.

HR Giger had also been working on Jodorowsky’s Dune, so he was also approached. Effectively, Ridley Scott just got the team back together for Alien.

Stan Lee worked with Moebius on a Silver Surfer story.

Here’s the whole thing.

Media Centre Description: Documentary about Frenchman Jean Giraud, one of the most influential comic strip illustrators and authors of all time and also one of the genre’s best kept secrets. BBC Genome: BBC FOUR Sunday 23rd September 2007 22:00

After this, there’s a trail for Flight of the Conchords then the recording stops with the beginning of Tron, shown now because Moebius was a design consultant on it.
