SeaQuest DSV – tape 1733

This tape opens with an earlier recording from Sky, which is quickly replaced by an ITN news bulletin. It’s the peace process in the Middle East, and it’s going as well as usual.

Then, an episode of SeaQuest DSV, The air conditioning has broken, and a part needed to repair them has been on back order for weeks, thanks to the bureaucracy, so they have to source one from ‘The Regulator’ a dodgy type who trades in probably stolen material. He’s played by John Bedford Lloyd, Jammer from The Abyss.

It’s a very silly story. The Regulator is a former genius scientist, who Commander Roy Scheider used to know, who dropped out of sight because he was obsessed with ‘spherical evolution’ which appears to involve the fact that ‘the Earth is a sphere’ and revolves ‘in a perfect sphere around the spherical sun’. It’s all nonsense, and even young Lucas points out that planets have elliptical orbits. He doesn’t mention that Earth isn’t even a perfect sphere, but I think it’s supposed to be nonsense.

And in the end, he asks Darwin the dolphin where the centre of the universe is, and Darwin tells him ‘It’s inside you’.

This show never fails to live down to my expectations.

After this, there’s most of a special hour-long episode of Watching. It’s not for me. I can hear there’s a lot of jokes, and the audience is enjoying it, but I’m struggling to raise a laugh.

The recording ends near the end, so I don’t even see the end, and I’ll never know if they won the birdwatching competition. It’s a short tape today.
