Smallville: Superman the Early Years – The Simpsons – Ashes to Ashes – The Wire – 25 May 2009

The first recording today is the last episode of season seven of Smallville: Superman the Early YearsArctic.

It opens with Edward Teague on a private plane, looking at his passport, which has the name Alejandro Santos from Argentina.

But he’s confronted by Kara, who wants to know where the device to control The Traveller is.

It gets violent, as she punches a hole in the fuselage, and he has to tell her that Lex Luthor has it (which should not have come as a surprise to her, really).

She then leaves the plane by flying right through the back, and it crashes.

Jimmy goes to Lex about his article about the alien symbols, but Lex has something else for him to do. “Jimmy, my phone call to the Department of Domestic Security kept Chloe out of federal prison. Now I need your help.” “What do you need?” “Lois Lane off my back. She’s been asking too many people too many questions.” “What can I do?” “Just help her find some information.” He hands him a folder. “Is any of this true?” “What matters is you make her believe it’s true.”

Chloe and Clark get the news about Edward Teague’s plane. Chloe gets hold of the black box flight recording, and Clark can make out Kara. “Kara? What’s she doing with Edward Teague?” “I don’t know. But I just heard her threaten to bring the plane down.” “We both know how reckless she can be when she’s angry. Maybe she found out that Teague was after you again.” “There must be some other explanation, Chloe. She’s not a killer.” “But, Clark, I’m a fan of Kara’s as well, but unless you’re hearing things, it sounds like she caused that accident.”

Kara finds the Orb in Lex’s safe, but she can’t touch it.

Clark finds her and brings her back to the barn. She doesn’t want to talk to him. “Something’s wrong with you, Kara. You need to stay here till we figure out what it is.” “You can turn a blind eye. But I’m gonna do whatever it takes to save Earth.”

Kara talks to Lex and asks about Veritas, but he denies all knowledge. She demonstrates that she’s from the same planet as the Traveller by lighting his fire from a distance. “It is your destiny to defeat The Traveller. I know you have the device. And all the pieces are in place.” “Wait, you’re talking about destroying one of your own kind.” “I’d always thought The Traveller was meant for good. Even he thinks he is. But when I went home to Krypton, I learned the truth about his fate. He won’t save mankind. He’ll destroy it.”

Jimmy tells Lex that he’s put Lois off the scent, but he doesn’t feel right about lying any more.

Clark gives Chloe the kryptonite so she can stop Kara. But when she pulls it out, it doesn’t seem to work.

Surprise! It’s not Kara at all, it’s Brainiac.

When he tries to do his mind-control thing on Chloe, like he did on Lana, Chloe’s Meteor healing powers kick in and feed back to him. “What the hell are you?”

Clark visits Chloe in hospital, and when she opens her eyes, he realises that it was Brainiac all along.

He finds Brainiac at the local power distribution centre. Brainiac taunts Clark. “The only way to save them would be to kill me now, in cold blood, which goes against everything you stand for. You could never deliberately take another man’s life.” But Clark knows how to deal with shitty AI. “You’re not a man. You’re a machine.”

Way up in space, we see Kara trapped in the Phantom Zone.

Lana recovers from her Brainiac infection, but she leaves before seeing Clark, laving a DVD to say goodbye. “I knew that if I looked into your eyes, I’d never be able to say it. We thought that we were meant to be together, Clark. But the truth is, we were fooling ourselves. I need you, but the world needs you more. And as long as I’m in your life, I’m holding you back. Please, don’t come after me.”

Clark isn’t afraid to cry, another reason to love him.

Lois arrives just as he finishes watching the DVD. Her immediate reaction is to hug him. Because, as you all know, it’s all about the hugs. Yes, readers, I was in bits after this scene.

Jimmy brings Chloe home from hospital, and proposes to her.

But their engagement gets off to a rocky start when agents from the department of homeland security arrive to arrest Chloe. Jimmy finds Clark to tell him. Clark asks where Lex is, and Jimmy tells him he’s flying around the Arctic Circle.

Clark finds Lex in the Fortress. “It’s not what you think, Lex. You don’t understand.” “For the first time, I think I do. You see, you live among us as a mild-mannered farm boy. But secretly, you’re a strange visitor from another planet, plotting our demise.” I do love the programme using all those classic lines from the comics and films and TV shows of the past.

“I’m sorry, Clark. But you are The Traveller. You hold the future of the entire planet in your hands. I’m here to take it back. Lex. You’ll never threaten the world again… ..Kal-El.” “Lex, don’t!” “I love you like a brother, Clark… ..but it has to end this way.”

The episode (and season) ends with the Fortress collapsing, and vanishing from the landscape with Lex and Clark inside.

The next recording is Ashes to Ashes episode 6 of series 2.

A man’s body is found floating in the canal, after he’s identified from missing persons reports, they contact his wife, Donna Mitchell (Daisy Haggard), who doesn’t believe them when she’s told they’ve found her husband’s body, so when they show her the body she freaks out.

The dead man worked for a loan shark, Trevor Riley, played by Sam Spruell, who I’m sure I’ve seen playing a similar character in something else – an episode of Spooks, I think. He becomes the prime suspect.

The victim’s car is found, and Ray finds tickets to Turkey. “There’s one for the day his body was discovered. To Turkey. And this one’s for the wife. Two months later.” “Sounds to me like somebody’s been spinning you a line, ma’am.”

Donna admits that they’d both planned to leave the country and he was going first, so they could claim on his life insurance, as they needed the money. She denies knowing anything about the murder.

The victim’s father, Stanley Mitchell, is played by Tom Georgeson, and he’s been beaten up by some heavies, in a similar MO to the way the loan shark works.

Alex has a vision of herself in surgery to have the bullet removed from her head.

Hunt breaks into Riley’s office, to look for evidence for anything they can use to put him away. They’re interrupted by Riley coming back, and Ray and Chris break into Riley’s car to distract him. Hunt finds a videotape with the initials DM.

It’s a tape of Riley having sex with Donna Mitchell.

That evening, Hunt is beaten up by masked men, More masked men break into Alex’s flat but she hides, so they just smash her TV. The monsters.

Ray has an insight from the victim’s car. “It might be nothing but… if I wanted to off someone. I wouldn’t put the body in the passenger seat.” “No. You’d put it in boot.” Yeah. Otherwise some plod could come along and you know… you’d be done for.” “So the kind of person who did this…” “Amateurs.” “Or they couldn’t face putting Colin in the boot.” “He’s be a dead weight too.” “This blanket’s all folded up on itself.” “Like a pillow or something?” “Yeah! Exactly like a pillow.” “So the kind of person who did this cared about Colin.”

Hunt grabs Riley, still his prime suspect, and locks him in the back of an old car, then takes him to a junkyard and threatens to dump him in the car crusher if he doesn’t admit to the murder. Even with this, Riley denies it.

They go to Donna Mitchell’s house, and tell Donna they’re arresting her for her husband’s murder.

But then his father Stanley admits that it was him. He got angry with his son and the insurance scam, and he pushed him over. “I was just so angry, cos there has to be a line where you say “no”. Where you say this is wrong. I wish I’d never said anything. I wish I’d just nodded…” “Where did it happen?” “I can’t. You don’t have a choice any more.” “It was at the house. I just… pushed him, I didn’t even mean to. I just pushed him… No! He fell over and cracked his head on the table. He was just lying there.”

Media Centre Description: Police drama set in the 1980s.

Omar is back in town.

Ziggy is ripping off his cars for his deal with Double “G”.

Nick’s girlfriend Aimee finds a big wad of cash hidden in the cellar. He tells her he’s getting paid by the Greeks off the books. He says he’s saving so they can afford to move.

Brother Mouzone talks to Cheese, who’s working for Proposition Joe, and tells him to leave the area. When he gets angry he shoots him in the arm with rat shot.

Valchek asks the FBI to get involved in the docks investigation after their big drugs bust. They want to concentrate on waterfront corruption.

Ziggy reports to Double-G about the cars he’s stolen and loaded into a container. Double-G gives him half what he was promised, and Ziggy doesn’t take this very well. When he calls him a Malaka, Double-G punches him and throws him out.

Ziggy goes back to the car, and grabs a gun, then comes back in and starts shooting, wounding an assistant, and shooting Double-G dead.

He doesn’t try to make a getaway, and later, he signs a confession.

Nick breaks the news to Frank about Ziggy. “What is Ziggy doing near the fucking Greeks?” “I don’t know.” “You’re supposed to. You’re his fucking cousin!” “You’re his father.”

The dodgy FBI agent Koutris spots the new cases on the FBI system, and meets with the Greek to warn him. He tells his people they need to stop using their phones.

Valchek arrives at the detail, angry that there’s no case against Frank Sobotka yet. He tells Prez he’s pulling him off the detail. “Get your narrow ass back to the district before I slap you with insubordination. Move, shit-bird!” So Prez punches him. When Valchek leaves, Prez hands his gun in to Daniels, knowing he’s just made a bad mistake. I enjoyed it, though.

Vondas meet with Eton who tells hm what Ziggy did. Vondas tells him he needs to clear out the warehouse of all records, and also to dump their phones.

Moreland and an FBI guy get the text messages sent by Vondas.

The detail need to raid the Pyramid warehouse, so they have to prepare the request for a search warrant quickly. Meanwhile, the Greek’s men are clearing out all contraband and evidence.

Media Centre Description: Season two of the acclaimed police drama from Baltimore. The detail uses satellite technology to its advantage. Bodie is unhappy that Proposition Joe’s people are slinging on his turf, but business flows anyway. Valchek visits the FBI in an attempt on getting real results on the docks. Ziggy’s deal goes bad with Double G in a big way. Greggs considers motherhood and Prez makes a major blunder.
