After this, there’s a trail for Young Dracula.

Then the recording stops after the start of Chucklevision.

The next recording starts with a trail for Earth: The Power of the Planet and for This World: Britain’s Most Wanted.

Then, we have a full recording of Earth: The Power of the PlanetVolcano.

Professor Iain Stewart visits Erta Ali. “The name means the smoking mountain to the local Afar people. It’s reckoned this volcano has been continuously erupting lava for longer than any other on Earth.”

He goes for a dip in Iceland, in a geothermally heated lake.

There’s footage of the eruption that formed the new island of Surtsey.

“This is the edge of a gigantic slab of the Earth’s crust, which runs unbroken for 7,000 kilometres. Right from this point, under the Atlantic, across the USA, all the way to California. It’s what’s known as the North American Plate.”

He visits Rotorua in New Zealand. “Rotorua is similar to how the early Earth would have looked. To us, the young Earth would have been a hellish place. But ironically, this volcanic activity helped create the right conditions for the most important change in the history of our planet. No-one’s sure exactly how it happened, but around four billion years ago, our planet saw the birth of life. These pools have a unique chemistry that is very similar to what would have existed on the early Earth.”

There’s amazing footage of an Icelandic eruption. This illustrates the time when the Earth was freezing, and volcanic eruptions released enough carbon dioxide into the atmosphere to start warming the planet again.

He visits Australia to look at the locations of some of the earliest fossils of complex multi-cellular life yet discovered.

There’s footage of Mount St Helens erupting.

Media Centre Description: Documentary series. Dr Iain Stewart reveals the role natural forces have played in the creation of the planet Earth. The first episode discusses volcanoes. Although they are destructive, volcanoes were crucial to the development of life on our planet. Iain’s journey takes him to Ethiopia to discover lava lakes, to Iceland to scuba dive between continents, and to New Zealand to sample hot springs. But it’s not just a holiday for Dr Stewart: he has a serious point to make.
