Doctor Who Confidential – 15 Aug 2006

Today it’s the penultimate episode of Doctor Who Confidential series 1 – The World of Who. It’s another Cut Down episode.

Alan Ruscoe tells us how uncomfortable the Anne Droid costume is.

Neill Gorton describes the costume as like armour.

Technician Charlie Bluett: “It’s not like going into a Halloween shop 20 pounds. I’ll have that latex Halloween mask and you put it on one-size-fits-all and away you go. These are custom fitted.”

Russell T Davies talks about the design of the Anne Droid. “Silver, like you expect science fiction droids to be.”

Paterson Joseph is enjoying that they’re playing the voice of Anne Robinson as the voice of the droid during filming.

Phil Collinson: “We thought we would have to get somebody to imitate her voice, because I couldn’t imagine she would appreciate quite how how terrifying the satire was. But she absolutely loved it.” Russell takes up the story: “Me and Phil went along. We were like kids, we would go, Oh my God, it’s Anne Robinson. I was a bit scared. We’re calling her Miss Robinson. we were very, very polite. She must have thought we’d stepped out of the 1950s or something. Nice to meet you, Miss Robinson.”

Billie Piper found being on The Weakest Link a hoot. And going by the costume and hair, it looks like most of her interviews for Confidential were filmed during this shoot.

I was not expecting John Humphrys to turn up on this show, but the episode looks at the Mastermind Doctor Who special that was made around this time.

Jason Mannix talks about the Doctor Who exhibition in Brighton.

Some young fans talk about their favourite bits. This must have been shot quite close to transmission, since the children are talking about the Slitheen, so they’ve seen the early episodes.

John Barrowman must have loved this episode as he gets to be naked as part of the job. And he was upset that BBC Editorial Policy told them they couldn’t show his bum.

Here’s the whole episode.

Media Centre Description: Simon Pegg narrates a behind-the-scenes look at the new series of Doctor Who, following the production team, writers and cast as they bring the Time Lord back to the screen. A journey from his ultimate fans to his ultimate foe.
