Today we continue our journey through season one of cut down Doctor Who Confidential with a look backstage of The Long Game in The Dark Side. Simon Pegg is delighted to be playing “an Evil Genius” but also spends a lot of the episode trying to say “The Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe”.
Russell T Davies is unrepentant of his torturing of the actors.
Christopher Eccleston doesn’t seem to mind, and seems to enjoy the silly names.
Billie Piper: “In every episode, the Doctor meets another genius with an ego as big as his.”
Director Brian Grant shows an early render of the Jagrafess.
Will Cohen talks about the evolution of the design, starting from something described in the script as a ceiling of meat.
Dave Houghton describes the shooting of the Jagrafess scene.
Since this is an episode about the evil genius villains of the show, we hear from Corey Johnson, who played Van Statten in Dalek. He does the usual actor thing of trying to find the humanity in the character, describing him as misguided rather than inherently evil. I like the fact that his interview is done on the Tardis set, despite him not having any scenes there.
Here’s the episode.
Media Centre Description: Simon Pegg narrates a behind-the-scenes look at the new series of Doctor Who, following the production team, writers and cast as they bring the Time Lord back to the screen. Pegg himself plays the latest incarnation of evil to face the Doctor.
