Doctor Who Confidential – 10 Aug 2006

Today, it’s Doctor Who ConfidentialThe Daleks. Christopher Eccleston talks about how excited everyone on set were when the Daleks were back.

Billie Piper: “I find it quite hard to believe that Daleks are really that scary. However, when I meet people the first thing they say is a) they hid behind the sofa when the dalek came on and b) the music really freaked them out as well.”

Lorraine Heggessey on the behind the scenes work to get permission from creator Terry Nation’s estate to use the Daleks in the new show.

Phil Collinson on the design of the Daleks, and how they’ve kept the basic shape and size the same.

Edward Thomas on the changes they made. “Colour was very important. We’ve we’ve added elements to them that I really feel make them a lot more chunky. Everything we’ve done is sort of a Mini Cooper to the Dalek.”

Russell T Davies talks about the body count in the history of Doctor Who.

Barnaby Edwards on the comfort (or otherwise) of being a Dalek operator.

Writer Robert Shearman’s first scene that he wrote was the scene where the Dalek is faced with a flight of stairs, and defies the audience’s expectations by rising up the stairs. I have to say, this scene is perfect, especially the dalek’s line – “Elevate”.

Nicholas Briggs is on hand with his trusty ring modulator to do the Dalek voice. I do like them having him on set doing the genuine voice, as it must help the actors enormously.

Murray Gold talks about the music, and we see some of the Choral music being recorded.

Neill Gorton slimes up the dalek inside the casing.

Here’s the full episode.

Media Centre Description: Simon Pegg narrates a behind-the-scenes look at the new series of Doctor Who, following the production team, writers and cast as they bring the Time Lord back to the screen. Trundling tanks of terror, armed with a sucker, a ray gun and a really bad attitude – it can only be the Daleks.
