Doctor Who Confidential – 07 Aug 2006

After my happiness at finding the first episode in this repeat series was the whole episode, today brings crushing disappointment, as this episode of Doctor Who ConfidentialTardis Tales is one of the Cut-Down episodes, and only 11 minutes long. Plus, this is episode 3, so we’ve missed episode 2.

Christopher Eccleston talks about seeing the Tardis on location for the first time. He also says that the tardis is designed to be operated by 6 or 7 time lords – something that is also mentioned in season 4, so I presume this is an existing piece of Doctor Who lore rather than something new from Russell.

Billie Piper on the Tardis: “We can do anything in this thing.”

Production Designer Edward Thomas shows off some of the little details of the Tardis console.

No programme about the Tardis would be complete without Clayton Hickman, although this cut-down edit appears to be missing a five minute exploration of the size and shape of the Tardis Windows.

Russell T Davies grew up in Swansea, where episode 3 was shot, and was very excited at the thought of his beloved show being in his home town.

Euros Lyn directed this episode. He was asked back to direct more.

Mark Gatiss wrote the episode.

Ernie Vincze describes some of the challenges of photographing Victorian Cardiff.

Phil Collinson describes the complexity of the location shoot for episode 3, including horse and carriages, and fake snow.

We hear from makeup artist Davy Jones and see some of the work that goes into making an actress look like a ghost.

Will Cohen explains some of the secrets being the ghostly Gelth.

Here’s a fuller version of this episode.

Media Centre Description: Simon Pegg narrates a behind-the-scenes look at the new series of Doctor Who, following the production team, writers and cast as they bring the Time Lord back to the screen. This episode celebrates the Doctor’s ultimate mobile home – the blue police box known as the Tardis. Small on the outside, but vast on the inside, this intergalactic time machine is more than meets the eye.
