The Critic – Absolutely Fabulous – Men Behaving Badly – tape 1988

First on this tape, an episode of The Critic. This is the first episode, and features Jennifer Lien as an actress who Jay falls for,

I didn’t warm to this. Jay is a bit too much of a loser, and the movie parodies aren’t the greatest gags in the world.

But the credits do include both Brad Bird, who would go on to much better things, and Judd Apatow.

After this, recording continues briefly with Madman of the People. I notice it’s directed by John Ratzenberger off of Cheers.

Then recording switches to the end of News 45, a news report reporting the news from 50 years ago, VE Day.

There’s a trailer for programmes on Saturday.

Then, Absolutely Fabulous, and an episode called Fear. Eddie visits Saffy at college to get her to open a tin. I recognise Regent’s College from the Guerilla Filmmaker’s Workshops.

Lulu makes a guest appearance, wanting to leave Eddie’s agency.

Kathy Burke plays editor Magda

BBC Genome: BBC One – 4th May 1995 – 21:45

There’s a trailer for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Then, Men Behaving Badlyand an episode called Cleaning Lady. Gary gets a cleaning lady, and spends all his time leching over her. This is vile.

BBC Genome: BBC One – 4th May 1995 – 22:15

There’s another Men Behaving Badly. It starts with a wedding, so you can bet someone’s dreaming. This episode is Babies and is the first in the fourth series.

Deb gives Tony the key to her flat so he can let in the plumber. So naturally he wanders around in a dressing gown, puts her knickers on his head and reads her diary. This is still vile.

Dorothy decides she doesn’t want to have children with Gary when she looks at the contents of his briefcase.

BBC Genome: BBC One – 25th May 1995 – 21:30

Next, Infidelity. Gary thinks Dorothy is having an affair.

BBC Genome: BBC One – 1st June 1995 – 21:30

Before the next episode, there’s the end of Newsroom South East, plus weather from Peter Cockroft.

There’s a trailer for Inside Story. And a trailer for Due South.

Then, the last MBB here, Pornography. It ends with a poor rendition of The Wanker’s Song.

BBC Genome: BBC One – 8th June 1995 – 21:30

The recording continues with a trailer for Sunday Night Programmes.

Then, Inside Story looking at PTSD.

BBC Genome: BBC One – 8th June 1995 – 22:00

After this, there’s a trailer for Thatcher – The Path to Power and Beyond. And one for Out of the Blue.

Then the tape runs out with the start of International Match of the Day.

In the ad breaks there’s a nice trailer for Rasputin the Mad Monk presented by Christopher Lee.
