Space: Above And Beyond – The Outer Limits – tape 2330

The tape starts with an episode of Space Above and Beyond already in progress. The Wildcards are brought in to fly a mission that doesn’t make sense, involving remote control ‘telepresence’ piloting ships. Interesting that when this was made, the term ‘drone’ wasn’t really common currency.

It guest stars Tucker Smallwood as Commodore Ross

And Ronald G Joseph plays General Ranford. He’s a Navajo, apparently, and the story references the Navajo code talkers of World War 2, as well as Allied operations to place false tactical information on dead bodies to make the enemy think an attack is going to happen in a different place.

The mission is to accompany an APC carrying passengers who all happen to be dead. The dead pilot is Ranford’s brother, recently executed for murder, and he sees the mission as a way of redeeming him. This part of the show is surprisingly moving. I say surprisingly because I usually have a problem giving a toss about any of this show.

After this, an episode of The Outer Limits called The Second Soul which I’ve looked at before when it was on BBC2.

Back to Space Above and Beyond. This show definitely takes history seriously.

The episode itself, Sugar Dirt, sees the Wildcards sent on a ground mission on a planet, where it appears they’ve won easily, but then more enemy forces appear. But in orbit, commanders realise that by sending reinforcements, the enemy are stretched thin, and the Earth forces can attack another target. But doing so means leaving the forces currently on the ground without support.

Captain Vansen tries to keep them together when they go days without any word from the fleet.

This is the second episode of SAAB that’s actually moved me by the end. What’s happening to me?

Finally on this tape, another The Outer Limits. William Hickey plays a very rich old man who lives in a penthouse suite at the top of the hospital he funds, where they’re working on a device that can prolong his life even more.

The lift appears to be a portal to the netherworld. Oddly, this reminded me of the lifts in Twilight Zone Tower of Terror in Disneyland, but that’s not Limits, that’s a Zone.

Bruce Davison plays the doctor who has designed the life-extending device. His moral quandary is that there’s a young woman at the hospital who would also benefit from the device, but he’s only made one of them, and Hickey insists on being the recipient.

Strange forces also seem to be conspiring to prevent him using the device for Hickey, like Computers exploding, and sparks flying through cables.

It’s not surprising all these strange things are happening as it appears to be the same hospital as Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace.

After this episode, recording continues for a short time with the start of Quantum Leap. Then the tape ends.

In among the adverts, here’s Spinal Tap discussing whether to use IBM for their logistics.
