Space: Above And Beyond – The Outer Limits – tape 2209

First on this tape, an episode of Space Above and Beyond. I will never get over what a clunky title for a series that is.

It opens with a gung ho quote, then reveals it’s from Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth. I like that it’s at least trying to do something interesting.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised when the show opens with the assassination of the leader of all of Earth, live on TV. Earth politics is in a bit of turmoil – we hear, over a news broadcast, that France has seceded from the European Union. Seems a little unlikely, but there you go.

This series, of course, has a racism metaphor, with ‘in-vitros’ being subject to suspicion and second class treatment, which is brilliant for the show because they can then cast white actors as the in-vitros and have racism against white people.

Oh God, now they have ‘silicates’ too. I’m assuming these are like the replicants in Blade Runner. Mor scope for suspicion and metaphor. It’s weird, though, how the silicate appears to have more personality than the human soliders.

Then they detain the two space marines who are in-vitro, and they have to take a loyalty test, which looks suspiciously like a Voight-Kampf test from Blade Runner.

I’m guessing there’s also a Nazi metaphor going on here

I’m sure this would all be a compelling story if I watched it in order, but everything’s so grey and humourless.

After this, an episode of The Outer Limits. In Unnatural Selection Cameron from Ferris Beuller and his wife want to genetically engineer their unborn child.

There’s a one in ten thousand chance that the procedure will turn their child into a psycho killer. This is a chance they want to take because genetically engineered people are higher achievers than regular schmoes like Ruck.

It’s complicated by the fact that his sister in law recently lost their child. But she’s also showing signs of domestic abuse. Hmm.

Sure enough, their child isn’t dead, it’s become one of these genetically altered monsters.

After this, recording switches to another Space Above and Beyond. One of the Wildcards (or is it Wildcats?) returns from a mission wounded. And it appears the rest of them are killed in action.

He keeps insisting his squadron are still alive, but the army think he’s delusional. As he groggily plods through flashbacks showing us what really happened, he’s being prepared for some kind of mind wipe, which I presume will mean he can’t save his friends in the end.

After this, more from The Outer Limits. Robert Foxworth plays the newly elected president. He’s suddenly taken to an underground bunker and told that something is approaching Earth at “half the speed of light”. “How long do we have?” he asks. “It’s 100 million miles away, so we have about 30 minutes” he’s told. By my reckoning, it’s more like 15 minutes, but that velocity might have been a very rough estimate.

I wish they’d do something like this for Trump. Bundle him into an elevator, take him to an underground bunker with no phone signal, and tell him the earth has been devastated, but not to worry, they’ve stocked up with a lifetime’s supply of KFC and McDonalds. He’d be happy as larry.

But in this story, the massive object collides with the moon, and the President thinks he’s literally dodged a bullet, but they believe the object came from a spaceship, and there’s another one heading for the Earth.

After the aliens destroy a satellite, it transpires they were trying to communicate, and a lower power transmission carries a video signal.

This is a fun episode, with a nice, darkly ironic ending.

After this, there’s the start of an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation when the tape ends.

In the adverts, there’s one for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty which announces the end of availability for the film on video. Disney had a perplexing marketing strategy that thought that putting a movie out on video for 100 days was a better financial strategy than having it available in perpetuity. I think their marketing department was mostly run by people on the theatrical side, for whom releasing the films into cinemas every few years was the way it was done.
