Star Trek – Voyager – Over Here – Seinfeld – tape 2200

First on this tape, on Sky One, an episode of Star Trek Voyager called Cold Fire.

This episode starts with a recap of the show’s pilot episode, reminding viewers that the alien caretaker who transported Voyager to the delta quadrant, and who died, had a mate. I wonder if that’s going to be significant.

Kes is given a mind meld by Tuvok to help her improve her telepathy. Then, in sickbay, a strange sound leads her and the Doctor to the cupboard where they’re keeping the caretaker’s remains in a bowl.

They track signs of another caretaker to a space station manned with thousands of Ocampa, Kes’s people. They are suspicious of Voyager, describing it as a ship of death.

The chief Ocampa tempts Kes with the promise of an extended lifespan, and greater powers. But her powers get a bit out of control, and Tuvok suffers.

When the female caretaker, Suspiria, appears, she’s not as scary as we might expect, although she’s not very friendly.

But she leaves when Janeway shows her mercy and doesn’t kill her with the handy caretaker-killing poison they were able to create.

After this, recording continues briefly with wrestling in Action Zone. Then recording switches to BBC1 and the end of an episode of Hamish Macbeth. The woman in this scene looked vaguely familiar – it’s Shirley Henderson.

There’s a trailer for Cardiac Arrest. Then a trailer for Dennis Potter’s last two programmes, Karaoke and Cold Lazarus, screened by the BBC and Channel 4 in a much touted ‘fitting memorial’ to the old curmudgeon.

Then, the first part of a comedy drama Over Here written by John Sullivan. It opens with Timothy West narrating in the present day about the war.

There’s a very neat transition as the camera pans up from West in the present day to see a spitfire flying overhead, then pans down to the same scene, but now it’s wartime.

The young Timothy West is played by his son, Samuel West.

Martin Clunes plays the Group Captain.

This programme was based on an idea by Ernest Maxin, a veteran producer of Morecambe and Wise and others.

Among the American airmen, there’s Corey Johnson, Doctor Who’s Henry Van Statten.

There’s also a young Andrew Lincoln.

It’s not a bad programme. Not a side-splitting comedy, but I don’t think that was the intention. The aerial combat sequences are pretty good, and they don’t stint on the explosions when an airbase is attacked.

BBC Genome: BBC One – 7th April 1996 – 20:20

After this, there’s a trailer for Madson starring Ian McShane. Then the start of a news bulletin, where Labour unveils a new policy to let schools borrow money for repairs.

Then, recording switches to Sky One, for an episode of Seinfeld. In The Dinner Party, Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer are going to a christening, and they decide they have to bring gifts.

After this, recording continues with an episode of Duckman. Not a series I watched. Then, the tape runs out during an episode of 60 Minutes. There’s a slightly fawning profile of the Mormon church just before the tape ends.

In the ads, there’s a slightly odd advert for Microsoft Office, featuring a Cheese company that appears not to have any decent stock of anything except Gouda.
