Cybill – Friends – Frasier – tape 2190

Before we get going, there’s a trailer for a programme in the Talentspotting series called Guardians, featuring Jason Isaacs.

Then, the last in this series of Cybill. Cybill is playing Booty, the sidekick to a children’s TV star.

Next, Friends and The One with the Prom Video. So much to enjoy in this episode, not least the 80s stylings of the eponymous video, but my favourite line in the whole thing is Chandler, when Joey says they’ll be ‘bracelet buddies.’ “That’s what they’ll call us!”

Then, Frasier and following on from Frasier’s fling with station boss Mercedes Ruehl, she tells him she’s moving to Chicago to take over a station there, and he makes a romantic, Casablanca inspired rush to the airport. I like the way the romance is undercut nicely when they spend some time getting to know each other while she’s waiting for a delayed plane, and they realise they’re totally incompatible.

After this, recording switches to a programme that wasn’t in my database. It’s another episode in Howard Jacobson’s Seriously Funny, in which the most humourless man alive tells us what’s funny. This is the first episode.

Jacobson’s father is a children’s entertainer. I think there’s some deep-seated reasons for his horribly negative view of humour there.

He talks to Roseanne, but she doesn’t get to say anything more that ‘You’re weird.’ She speaks for us all.

He meets the real Patch Adams, building a funny hospital.

At one point, the assembled people have to eat from a trough.

There’s a long sequence where he extols the benefits of racist humour, with Bernard Manning and Roy Chubby Brown, where he seems to imply that racist humour is better for you than non-racist humour. He really is a fucking idiot.

After this, recording continues, with the whole of an HBO TV Movie – Without Warning – The James Brady Story, with Beau Bridges as Ronald Reagan’s press secretary who was shot during the attempted assassination of Reagan.

The tape ends right after this.
