Cybill – Friends – Frasier – tape 2192

This tape opens with some 90s Quantel graphics bouncing all over a vaguely familiar face. It’s Simon Mayo, looking slightly more hirsute than usual, on the end of an episode of Top of the Pops.

There’s a look ahead to Saturday Night on BBC1.

Then, a programme that’s not on my database for this tape. Future Fantastic was a science fact/fiction documentary series, presented by Gillian Anderson (still doing her American accent so as not to scare the fanboys).

Among the people interviewed, Marvin Minsky

SF writer John Clute

Another SF writer Gregory Benford, who has signed up to have his head frozen when he dies.

Brian Stableford

These two are the poster children for immortality. I’d rather die young than have to spend any time with them.

BBC Genome: BBC One – 30th August 1996 – 19:30

After this, there’s a trailer for Tomorrow’s World. And a trailer for X Cars.

Then, the start of an episode of Safe and Sound. After a couple of minutes, recording switches to the end of an episode of Brookside.

Then, an episode of Cybill. Cybill’s cousin from back home comes to town to try for The Price is Right. Her daughter Zoe is suddenly enjoying spending time with her. She even goes to a computer exhibition with her. “100 megs of RAM, 3 gigabyte hard drive, parallel processing.”

After this, Friends and The One with the Lesbian Wedding. Joey has just started on Days of our Lives, and tells the gang about ‘smell the fart’ acting.

And after this, there’s a nice bespoke Father Ted trailer,

Then, another Frasier. And it’s a Christmas episode.

Recording continues, with an episode of Whose Line is it Anyway? Performers this week are Stephen Frost

Greg Proops

Colin Mochrie

and Ryan Stiles

After this, the last episode in the series of Takeover TV presented by Adam Buxton. There’s a consistent aesthetic with almost all of the shorts featured here. Shot on domestic camcorders, little or no additional lighting, sound captured on the camcorder, they all have a distinct look – the Video Nation look. When you look at even the most rudimentary YouTube video shot these days it’s amazing to see how far things have come.

After this, the rest of the tape plays out with the start of Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz.
