The Art and Craft of Movie Making – tape 2822

Here’s a bunch of programmes from the Learning Zone.

The tape opens with the end of a programme about economics.

There’s a short piece titled ‘Sound Box’ about Marconi’s experiments in broadcasting.

Then, Derek Malcolm introduces a number of programmes in the Film Education series.

The first programme is a ‘masterclass’ by Stefan Schwartz, co-writer and director of Shooting Fish and director of the Peter Capaldi road movie Soft Top Hard Shoulder.

He seems a little upset, still, that the National Film and Television School turned him down (“the bastards” he says). Since the masterclass is being given there, this is his revenge.

After this, another Sound Box, this time a ‘guess the voice’ competition. This one is Fay Wray, I’m guessing.

Next, Arthur Miller talks about adapting The Crucible for the screen.

Also featuring Joan Allen. I misread the caption here as ‘Executive Producer’.

The film’s director Nicholas Hytner

Daniel Day Lewis

Winona Ryder

The next programme is one we’ve already seen – Sense & Sensibility – From Text to Text about Emma Thompson adapting the Jane Austen novel.

Next, Jane Eyre – Reader, I Married Him. A look at why classic texts are attractive for film adaptation.

There’s a howler of a spelling mistake on the end caption. Clearly the caption writer was being so careful to put the Y in the right place in Eyre that they accidentally put one in Jane as well.

BBC Genome: BBC Two – 10th December 1997 – 00:30

After this, recording switches to another night of Learning Zone programmes. There’s the end of a programme about Japanese Americans, then another Sound Box item about the Open University.

Then, a series of programmes looking at directing, first with a masterclass by Richard Loncraine, director of The Missionary.

Next, The Wind in the Willows: Filming Mr Toad. Interviews with director and star, the lovely Terry Jones (as seen on yesterday’s tape) who played Mr Toad.

Also interviews, Eric Idle

Producer John Goldstone

Antony Sher

The next programme is introduced as Bernardo Bertolucci face to face with Jeremy Isaacs, but in fact it’s Baz Luhrmann talking about adapting Shakespeare for Romeo + Juliet.

Here’s Claire Danes in front of a blue-screen left over from early 1970s Doctor Who.

Leonardo DiCaprio

John Leguizamo, who plays the fiery, warlike Tybalt.

Paul Sorvino

After this, preceded by the same continuity announcement as the last programme, Face to Face with Bernardo Bertolucci.

After this, there’s another Sound Box with a recording of some regional dialects from Devon, from 1937.

BBC Genome: BBC Two – 11th December 1997 – 00:30

Then, the tape ends with the start of a programme about French.
