Star Trek – Voyager – The Simpsons – tape 2054

First on this tape, early Star Trek Voyager with an episode called Phage. It’s a crowdpleaser, as Neelix gets zapped.

Neelix gets zapped

He’s had his lungs removed. Isn’t this an old urban legend?

They find the Vidians, who harvest organs, and have already used Neelix’s lungs, so Kes has to donate one of hers. What a waste.

The next episode is The Cloud. Janeway is cranky in the morning if she doesn’t get coffee, and the replicators are rationed. So when they detect Omicron particles in a nebula, they head in, because they might find anti-matter particles to boost their power reserves.

There’s a sequence where Tom Paris shows Harry Kim how he uses the holodeck as a sex toy. Yuck.

Next, an episode of The Simpsons, Lisa the Vegetarian. Lisa becomes vegetarian and meets Paul and Linda McCartney.

Following this, more Voyager with Eye of the Needle. Harry Kim spots a potential wormhole. But it’s too small to travel through, and they try to contact the other side, in the Alpha Quadrant.

They contact a Romulan scientist, and hope to get him to pass messages to their families back in the Alpha Quadrant, but in a tragic twist, they learn that he’s actually from 20 years in the past.

Finally, another Simpsons with Home Sweet Home Diddly Dum Doodily. Through a contrived series of events, Bart, Lisa and Maggie are taken into care and fostered by the Flanders, leading Ned to try to baptise them when he discovers they haven’t been baptised.

Whilst there’s lots of funny stuff here, it’s an episode that makes me extremely uneasy. Social Services can be a very blunt tool, and there are plenty of real cases where children are taken from parents for the flimsiest of reasons. Maybe it’s just one of those subjects that I’m sensitive about – the thought that my children could be taken away by the state is a rather horrifying one.

Sorry to drag the tone into such a dark place.

After this, there’s the very start of Beverly Hills 90210, and the tape ends.
