This tape opens with the end of Rab C Nesbitt.

Then, a Not The Nine O’Clock News trailer and a trailer for The X Files.

Then, Shooting Stars with guests Norman Pace and Cathy Lloyd

There’s a trailer for the Sunday Show.

Then, an episode of Room 101, with someone who’s already in it, once again, it’s Terry Christian. I never liked him.

After this, recording switches to Sky, and a programme that nobody seems to talk about these days. VR5. I barely remember it, despite taping several episodes.

My first surprise is that Anthony Head is in it. Yes, Giles from Buffy, looking very Giles-y.

The lead is Sydney, who I always think is played by Daryl Hannah, but is actually her doppelganger, Lori Singer. I this episode, she’s going on holiday from whatever VR5 is, for some “VR detox”.

She returns to what I’m guessing is her old home, and there’s a creepy guy there who tells her it’s haunted. I’m guessing a Halloween episode.

Usefully, the titles explain the title.

What is VR.5

It has five names in the ‘Created By’ credit so this has got to be the best TV show ever. Most of them only have one creator. Two at most.

This episode is called Send Me an Angel. There’s some secret about the old house. It might have to do with Sydney’s childhood, judging by the flashbacks, or it might have something to do with the little girl who leaves her doll there because her father won’t let her have it in her house.

So Sydney goes back to her VR rig to find out more. Not sure how this works in this show, but when she goes into the VR, all of a sudden she’s in a shiny costume in the house.

There follows a very freaky sort of dream sequence involving a fire, the little girl, two parents, and then suddenly, David McCallum. He might be a regular character for all I know.

David McCallum

These are also interspersed with what look like Sydney’s own memories of some childhood trauma.

After this sequence, I think how it’s supposed to work is that the VR actually taps into someone’s mind. I just assumed it was a horribly designed interface to Google. So we were seeing the little girl’s mind.

One of Sydney’s co-stars also appears to be a male model with ridiculously good hair. After Renegade it looks like that was the vogue in the mid 90s.

Good hair

There’s another VR trip, this time back to childhood. Back to when Sydney’s dad was doing the research into VR. All this backstory. And then, suddenly, here’s Louise Fletcher. I wonder who she’ll turn out to be.

Louise Fletcher

She’s Sydney’s mum, and in the present she looks a bit spaced out. Maybe her brain was fried by prototype VR. Yep, that’s how it’s looking.

There’s another fire at the house, but they all get out fine. Giles, sorry, Oliver pops up in the nick of time to help. And it was the little girl’s father who set the fire, as he was a mad priest.

After this, an episode of COPS. Following this, a programme called The Serial Killers.

Then, randomly, an episode of Dream On, “B.S.Elliot”, co-stars Patrick Macnee as a great novelist fallen on the bottle.

It’s directed by Michael McKean, who also appears as Martin’s boss.

After this, there’s an episode of Tales from the Crypt. This episode is called Dead Wait and it’s directed by Tobe Hooper. John Rhys Davies stars.

The tape ends just after this.

  1. I always thought Lori Singer looked more like a Rosanna Arquette.

“The Wild Thornberrys” also shared “created by” credit among five people, and gave “developed by” credit to three other people!
