Star Trek – Voyager – tape 2077

Only a couple of episodes here. First, it’s Emanations. Voyager picks up traces of a stable trans-uranic element in a system, and beam down to investigate, finding a large number of humanoid bodies, covered in a strange web-like substance.

There’s a strange subspace anomaly that appears, so the crew beam out, but only Chakotay and Torres return, along with a newly dead alien body, and Harry Kim is nowhere to be found. Cut to a funeral ceremony somewhere, and as they are performing the ceremony, there’s a knocking from the alien coffin, and there’s Harry Kim.

He meets one of the elders of this planet, who tells Kim that he came from ‘The Next Emanation’ – their afterlife. This naturally throws his whole worldview into doubt. He’s played by Jerry Hardon – Deep Throat from The X-Files.

This episode is basically a parable about euthanasia.

The next episode is Cathexis and it starts with Janeway participating in a holo-novel. That’s not always a good start for a Star Trek episode. They’re a mixed bag.

Janeway Holo Novel

LA Law’s Michael Cumpsty gamely dons the sideburns to appear in the novel.

Her gaming is interrupted when an away mission returns, and Chakotay has had all the ‘bio-neural energy’ sucked out of his brain.

Strange things are happening with the ship – it keeps changing course, and Tom Paris seems to be responsible, but he claims to have no memory of making changes. Then Torres does something similar, and Janeway intuits that an alien presence is controlling the crew, and because the whole crew is susceptible, she transfers command functions to the Emergency Medical Hologram.

But then the EMH is shut down. It turns out that not only is there an alien around there jumping from host to host, but so is Chakotay’s brain pattern, and he’s trying to help the ship.

After this, the recording stops, and underneath there’s a bit of Beverly Hills 90210.
