This tape opens with some weather, and Bill Giles.
Then there’s a trailer for Living Dengerously – a nature programme about bears.
Then, a little later than published because of the extended news (Boris Yeltsin declaring a state of emergency in Russia perhaps?) Dawn French takes ‘her first serious role’ in Tender Loving Care, written by Lucy Gannon of Peak Practice and Soldier Soldier.
Dawn French plays a night nurse in a geriatric ward, and the film opens with the most appalling scene – French singing ‘If you were the only girl in the world’ with one of her patients, both of them horrifically out of tune with each other. How the BBC can dare to broadcast such horror is beyond me.
One of her patients is the great Peter Jones, the voice of the Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Also appearing is Joan Sims, from the Carry On films.
French has been occasionally killing her patients. She’s discovered by her co-worker, Rosemary Leach.
They enter into an uneasy alliance, putting inform patients out of their misery.
There’s a weird bit where one of her children is watching TV, and what sounds like a pastiche of the Eastenders ‘doof doofs’ plays – they couldn’t use the actual theme?
This is a strange story, and one that doesn’t really have any conclusion – French’s character at the end is practically unchanged from the beginning. It’s creepy, though, and Rosemary Leach is very good.

Recording switches to Sky Movies, for David Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch. Much as I’ve enjoyed Cronenberg’s films, this isn’t one that I particularly like. Drug-based fantasies tend to bore me, and when a film has such fractured logic as this one, it’s unclear quite whether we’re supposed to care about anything.
It’s always nice to see Judy Davis in anything, and Peter Weller is suitably stoic as the movie’s Burroughs avatar, but I just can’t enjoy this, so I’m skipping a rewatch.
After this, recording continues with a ‘torrid tale’ from New Orleans, Zandalee, starring Nicolas Cage and Judge Reinhold. It actually has an interesting cast, including Viveca Lindfors, Steve Buscemi, Marisa Tomei and Joe Pantoliano. But the casual full frontal (female) nudity right after the credits suggests this is a cheapo porny thriller.
Judge Reinhold is a co-producer on this, so I wonder if he developed the project just so he could have some simulated rumpy-pumpy. Perhaps he was going for a similar career trajectorry to David Duchovny.
