Cheers – tape 41

This tape opens with some gardening.

Then, some Cheers, from Series 3, with Coach in Love part 1. Coach meets a woman and falls head over heels in love, as does she, and it’s all going swimmingly. Sam, meanwhile, is roundly rebuffed by her daughter, and it becomes a bit of an obsession with him.

Coach in Love

Nicholas Colasanto was so good as Coach. He was also a TV director, something quite the opposite of his Cheers character.

The episode ends on a cliffhanger. Coach proposes, she accepts, then she gets a phone call telling her she’s won the lottery, and she completely forgets about Coach’s proposal.

Before the next episode, the end of an episode of In Search of Paradise.

Then, Coach in Love part 2. They always manage to do the ‘previously on’ in an amusing way on Cheers. This time we see the exterior of our regulars’ homes, and they tell the story of the previous episode  in character.

In this episode, Irene tells Coach that she’s sorry, but since she wont he lottery, and is now moving in very different circles, she doesn’t think she can be engaged to Coach. But Coach is in deep denial, and when the wedding day comes round, he still thinks it’s going to happen.

Next episode is Diane Meets Mom, a great episode in which Diane meets Frasier’s frankly scary mother. Naturally, she’s nervous and spends their whole dinner talking, and afterwards, back in the bar, when Frasier goes to get drinks, mother Crane looks Diane straight in the eye and says “Listen and listen carefully. Stop seeing my son or, as God is my witness, I’ll kill you. I have a gun. I know how to use it.”

Very funny, and Nancy Marchand is excellent as Frasier’s malevolent mother.

The next episode is An American Family. Carla’s ex, Nick (the ever wonderful Dan Hedaya) returns to the bar with his new wife Loretta (brilliantly played by Jean Kasem). Nick and Loretta want children, but she can’t have them, so Nick wants to take one of his children with Carla.

Nick & Loretta

Before the next episode, the end of Gardener’s Calendar.

Then, an episode called Diane’s Allergy. Diane and Frasier decide to move in together, but Diane develops an allergy.

After this, recording continues briefly into an episode of The Single Life, a documentary looking at single people, featuring a few famous faces, including (in this segment) Barbara Cartland. The recording stops after 4 minutes of this programme.
