The Front – tape 565

The tape opens with the end of a documentary about Henry Moore.

Then, The Front, set during the McCarthy witchhunts, when many actors and writers were blacklisted for ‘unamerican activities’. Woody Allen plays a schlub who is drafted by some writers to act as their ‘front’ – they write scripts for TV, and he submits them under his own name. Naturally, there’s problems – the studio’s lawyer, tasked with sniffing out commies, gets actor Zero Mostel to spy on Allen, under threat of being fired himself for communist sympathies.

Allen starts to get a little precious about ‘his’ writing, and the film climaxes with his testifying before the committee.

The film was written and directed by Walter Bernstein and Martin Ritt, both blacklisted, and Zero Mostel was blacklisted too. Not a proud time for the US.

After this, recording continues with some late night Olympics from Seoul, presented by Barry Norman.

There’s about 30 minutes of this coverage before the tape ends.
