Monty Python’s Flying Circus – Clive Anderson Talks Back – Jonathan Ross with David Lynch – Cinemattractions – tape 583

The tape opens with a brief glimpse of the Channel 4 logo before it’s overwritten by a newer recording – the end of an episode of Indelible Evidence, the dramatised documentary series about forensic science. there’s a trailer for Nippon.

Then, an episode of Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Is it heretical to say I’m slightly shocked at the amount of boom shadow in some of these sketches?

This is the last episode in the first series.

BBC Genome: BBC Two – 19th October 1990 – 21:30

Following this, there’s an advert for Yes Prime Minister on video. Then, the start of an episode of Have I Got News For You. Quite an early one, judging by the theme music. But after a minute of so of this (too short to see the guests) recording switches to Channel 4.

It’s an episode of Clive Anderson Talks Back. Guests on this episode are:

Harry Enfield, who talks about his forthcoming BBC series, and gives a preview of Dave Nice – possibly the first time the character was heard on TV.

The next guest is Dr Dick Vane-Wright, a research scientist at the Natural History Museum, who has a particular interest in eating insects. Clive gets two audience members up to try some of the dishes he’s prepared.

His final guest is Jeffrey Archer. It’s a prickly interview, especially when Clive brings up the recent accusations of plagiarism over his book of short stories.

Following this, there’s Jonathan Ross For One Night Only – David Lynch, a long interview and profile of Lynch.

David Lynch

Jonathan Ross adopts David Lynch’s dress code for the interview.

When it talks about Dune, here’s Frank Herbert himself doing the front board for the first scene.

After this, recording switches, with the end of The James Whale Radio Show. Then some ITN headlines.

Then, an episode of Cinemattractions. This was a cheap US TV show which repacked trailers and Electronic Press Kit material into a film show. Terrible, really, especially when compared to Film XX, but in those days, this was a good way to see trailers for movies that were coming up, so its function has been completely replaced by the internet.

And the colour saturation is appalling. Good old NTSC.

After this, there’s The European Skateboarding championships. Now, if you were putting together a show about skateboarding, who would you get to present it?

Mr Bennett

It’s Mr Bennett from Take Hart. Obvious when you think about it.

The recording stops about 18 minutes into this programme.
