Once Upon A Time In America – tape 1819

More from Channel 4 with Once Upon a Time In America, a film I still haven’t watched, and I’m afraid now’s not the time. I’m not a fan of the gangster genre generally, and this film, by all accounts, has some unpleasantness that I’d prefer not to watch. Sorry about that.

It’s shown as part of C4’s De Niro season. And I know it’s a long film, but there are six screenwriters credited.

Six Screenwriters

This is only part one of the movie, in any case, so I’d be annoyed if Id’s got halfway through without the other half to watch.

Following this, another delightful sounding movie. A comedy from Jean Luc Godard. I thought that was an oxymoron. It’s Une Femme est une Femme. A film so pompous and self regarding that this print has some spiel about the prizes it won at the Berlin film festival at the start.

Un Film de

Since it talks about ‘stirring up cinema conventions’ in comedy films, I’m going to presume the cnvention it stirs up is that comedy films have to be funny.

Presented as evidence, a randomly selected bon mot.

Happy event

Woah, hold on there, Marcel Proust.

And lucky for me, the whole film is here, waiting to be enjoyed by me. The recording stops when Channel 4 closes down for the night.

  1. I never got the appeal of Once Upon a Time in America, there’s a lot of it, which denotes importance to some people, but I preferred Leone’s westerns and the treatment of women in it is rough, and not in a “we’re making a statement here!” way either. If only he’d lived to make his Russian epic.

Godard though, I dunno, it’s fashionable to bash him but I love his 60s movies, even his self regard was amusing and you can’t say no to Anna Karina, the woman is an icon. She even made a film with Bob Monkhouse.
