Babylon 5 – tape 1817

First on this tape, it’s the very first episode of Babylon 5, J Michael Straczynski’s epic Science Fiction series. And Channel 4 pull out all the stops with their cliché-ridden introduction. “We’re activating outward thrust now on 4…”

Midnight on the Firing Line serves as a sort of second pilot episode. There’s lots of “You’re new here” and “I’ve just been assigned”. The Narns are presented as the villainous ones, and we first hear Londo’s prophecy about how he will die, which indeed plays itself out at the end of the whole series, albeit with an interesting wrinkle.

Soul Hunter is next. W Morgan Sheppard off of Max Headroom plays the titular hunter. Then Born to the Purple, and Infection, which guest stars David McCallum as Dr Franklin’s old teacher, who brings a dangerous artefact aboard the station.

Following this episode, recording continues, and there’s a Mighty Mouse cartoon, Pandora’s Box. Then Channel 4 News, which leads with D-Day remembrance activities. The tape ends during the news.

  1. The still Tango campaign was strange, the first advert was a deliberately badly made (VHS quality) advert appropriating rave culture, and flogging the product. They then tried to decry the product as a ripoff in the advert you have, with a ‘consumer line’ set up. Problem was, the original run started fermenting in the containers, so had to be recalled for real, unfortunate timing which led to a relaunch 2 years later.
