Star Trek Voyager – Babylon 5 – Triumph of the Nerds – Seinfeld – tape 2291

Something for everybody on this tape.

First programme is Star Trek Voyager and the episode Resistance. Joel Grey guest stars as an alien with a funny nose. I’m not helping much, am I Dad?

After this, there’s a bit of wrestling in Action Zone.

Then, recording switches to Channel 4 for a trail for Triumph of the Nerds before we get one of those C4 character idents, from Richard Biggs off of Babylon 5.

Followed by an actual episode of Babylon 5. This episode is Convictions, an early episode is Season 3, the best season of Babylon 5.

Following this, there’s a trailer for Karaoke and Cold Lazarus, the last works by Dennis Potter, which were shown on consecutive nights, one on BBC and the other on Channel 4.

Then, we have Part 2 of Robert X Cringely’s Triumph of the Nerds. Some kind person has already put it on YouTube.

Interestingly, right at the start there’s a strange edit. The words ‘Ed Roberts invented the Altair Personal Computer’ are missing. Was this a legal edit? Without it the intro makes little sense.

This is the central story of the IBM PC, covering the Digital Research vs Microsoft battle to produce the OS for the IBM PC.

Only the first half of the programme is here, though, on the end of the Babylon 5 recording. Which is annoying. Good thing it’s already on YouTube, isn’t it?

Recording switches to Sky One, for an episode of Seinfeld.

Following this, there’s an episode of Duckman called Gripes of Wrath.

The tape stops during an ad break.

  1. I always thought the best Channel 4 idents were from William G. Stewart with “Categorically Channel 4!” and Dennis Franz, the latter probably saying what many were thinking – “You’re watchin’ Channel 4… like you don’t know already, huh?”
