Quick! To the batpole! Well, to Channel 4, anyway, for the big-screen version of the 1966 Batman. Adam West, Burt Ward, Cesar Romero as the Joker, Lee Meriwether as Catwoman, Burgess Meredith as Penguin and Frank Gorshin as Riddler – the gang’s all here.
We fondly remember this show, but even at the time I thought it was a bit rubbish. Camp has its charm, but sometimes it just feels insulting to the audience. I think that’s why Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman was so well received, despite having major problems of its own, because it felt like it was taking things just a little more seriously.
And what could be more serious than an orphaned son of a millionaire who decides the best way to use his fortune to do good is to dress up as a bat and punch criminals in the face one by one. Are you listening, Bill Gates? Cure as many diseases as you want, Windows Boy, it’ll never substitute for having a Batmobile.
Perhaps I shouldn’t be so harsh on the West Batman. It has some interesting touches, like the way all the villains’ lairs are shot with dutch angles – the camera always lopsided.
And the show’s ZAPP! POW! sound balloons are the kind of touch we love, when it comes from the likes of Edgar Wright.
After the movie, a trailer for St Elsewhere starts, but is cut off by another recording. There’s a trailer for Purple Rain (talking about things that were wrong with Burton’s Batman…) and then we have an episode of St Elsewhere. This episode guest stars Kathy Bates
After St Elsewhere there’s a trail for The Chart Show. Also a trailer for The Golden Girls.
Then, the start of a repeat of an episode of Hot Metal, series 2 episode 2. There’s only a few minutes of this before the tape ends. Good series, though.
